What Do Super Investors Buy and Sell
This template automates the process of analyzing an investor's public 13F filings from the SEC EDGAR database to identify and report changes in their stock holdings between quarters.
This automation streamlines the analysis of investment fund holdings by performing the following steps:
  1. Takes a CIK (Central Index Key) for an investor or fund as its main input.
  2. Navigates to the SEC EDGAR website to find the specified company's public filings.
  3. Identifies and extracts data from the two most recent 13F-HR (quarterly holdings) reports.
  4. For each filing, it extracts a complete list of holdings, including the stock's CUSIP, name, and the number of shares held.
  5. Performs a comparative analysis to pinpoint changes between the two quarters, categorizing them as new positions, increased holdings, decreased holdings, or closed positions.
  6. Generates a new Google Sheet with a clean, easy-to-read report summarizing all signficant changes, including the number of shares before and after, and the percentage change.
Usage Ideas
  • Track the portfolio moves of your favorite "super-investors" like Warren Buffett or Michael Burry.
  • Generate new investment ideas by seeing which stocks top funds are buying or selling.
  • Automate competitive intelligence by monitoring the quarterly portfolio shifts of rival asset management firms.
  • Create a watchlist of CIKs to automatically generate quarterly change reports for each.
Customization Ideas
This template provides a powerful base for financial analysis that you can easily tailor to your specific needs. You can:
  • Analyze any investor by simply providing their CIK number.
  • Adjust the sensitivity of the analysis by setting a minimum percentage change threshold to filter out minor portfolio adjustments.
  • Control the scope by choosing whether to include newly acquired positions in the report.
  • Change the output format by customizing the columns in the generated Google Sheet.
  • Reroute the results to a different service. For example, instead of creating a Google Sheet, you could have the summary sent to a Slack channel or delivered via email.
